     With everything involved in getting a new business off the ground, this post was a long time coming, and for those of you waiting for this information I offer my sincere apologies.  From here on out, things should progress at a more regular pace.  So lets start learning about feminized seeds!
    
     Way back in the 1970's and 1980's a group of plant scientists led by Dr. H.Y. Mohan Ram, from India, performed numerous documented studies which revealed several successful methods of inducing sex reversal in female dioecious plants to produce fertile male flowers.  Pollen from male flowers generated through sex reversal will always contain only female genetic material, and therefore seeds created with this pollen will always be 100% female.

     Since this blog post serves as an introduction to feminization methods, and STS solution in particular, we'll explain exactly how and why pollen generated through sex reversal always results in 100% female seeds in a later blog post.  The particulars of plant genetics that make 100% female seeds possible holds true for all of the feminization methods we will cover, and since many growers are more concerned with WHAT works rather than exactly HOW, we'll save that for later. 
    
     Silver thiosulphate anionic complex (STS) is the first of the successful feminization methods documented by Dr. Ram that we will discuss, because it is the most reliable method and because STS is the method you will be using to make your own 100% female seeds when you use FemSeedz™ Feminizing Spray.

     So let's look at what exactly STS solution consists of.  The two ingredients which combine to form the simple yet biologically active silver thiosulphate complex are silver nitrate and sodium thiosulphate.  When silver nitrate and sodium thiosulphate are added to distilled water in the correct dilute ratio, silver ions and thiosulphate ions naturally form the silver thiosulphate complex which induces sex reversal in female dioecious plants, as Dr. Ram documented in 1982.

     Dr.Ram found that silver ions block female plants' production of ethylene, which is a compound involved in normal ripening and flower development.  When ethylene is blocked, female plants are essentially 'tricked' into forming male flowers--male flowers which contain only female genetics and will thus produce only female seeds.  Dr. Ram also found that although silver ions of various form will perform this function (silver ions present by themselves, without an ionic complex--such as silver ions from silver nitrate by itself, or in the form of colloidal silver), silver ions present as part of the STS complex are most effective and reliable at sex reversal.  In fact, when a female plant (or part of a female plant) is treated at the initiation of flowering--when the hours of darkness become long enough for flowering to begin--and once again two weeks later, the treated plant (or plant part) will have a 99% incidence of sex reversal.  In other words, if 100 female plants are treated with STS solution just as flowering begins, and once again exactly two weeks later, 99 of those plants can be expected to exhibit sex reversal on the treated plant part.  And, 100% of the seeds produced from the pollen of those sex-reversed females that were induced to produce male flowers will be female seeds.

     Besides its effectiveness, gardeners will naturally be concerned with the safety of using STS for female seed production.  Anytime chemicals are used, safety is a primary concern--especially so with gardeners who produce organic products.  So lets consider the safety of STS ingredients.  First of all, gardeners will happy to know that STS only has a direct physical effect on the treated plants and is not absorbed or passed on to the female seeds produced--in other words, absolutely no STS residue is present in the female plants grown from female seeds produced through use of STS solution, and since the plants actually treated with STS are used only for pollen production and not consumed, there is no risk of ingesting the silver thiosulphate solution.

     Silver nitrate is commonly used in photography, and has several medical uses due to its antiseptic properties.  While it is true that silver nitrate is corrosive and will stain skin black if handled directly, it is very safe in the extremely dilute concentration used in STS solution.  In fact, until the development of modern antibiotics silver nitrate solution was administered directly into newborn babies' eyes to prevent bacterial eye infections.  Obviously, the silver nitrate poses very little risk (if you poured it onto your hands or ate it, temporary skin staining is the worst effect you would experience from the tiny amount of silver nitrate found in FemSeedz™).

    What about sodium thiosulfate? Among its various uses sodium thiosulphate is used directly on skin as a topical antifungal agent and is used as an ingredient in table salt (every time you add a salt packet to your french fries you are eating some), so you have nothing to fear from use of this chemical.
